The Formula

You can get plastic Easter eggs at the dollar store for way cheap. And now there are little flyers perfect for stashing in eggs.

All you ex-Christians: Imagine how great it would have been if someone let you know there was no Hell to be afraid of when you were little?

Please do not emulate the illegal behavior of Christian evangelists

Dear volunteers,

Just a word of caution: When you are on your missions, do not put anything inside a mailbox. It may not seem like a big deal, but technically it is a violation of the law.

We have not heard of any of our volunteers doing this, but Brian Sapient informs us that a Rational Response Squad member just received a Christian DVD placed inside his mailbox by a non-Postal-Service person. (With a note reading, “Dear Resident, I hope you enjoy me sharing my knowledge about Jesus with you at this time of year.”)

Obviously, there’s no particular harm done, but make sure you don’t do this. Someone may try to get you for it.

Sapient sarcastically comments:

As we’ve seen over the last few days, the outrage from Christians that we’d dare place a DVD in a Church has been great. We’ve heard things like “all you’re doing is strengthening the Christians’ resolve” and “Please, get a hobby. Get a girlfriend… something” and “you are demented little animals who have no tolerance for other people and their system of belief.” Therefore we can deduce it’s possible the “Jesus” DVD is strengthening the atheists’ resolve, the people handing out the DVD have no hobbies or girlfriends, and that they’re simply demented animals with no tolerance for others beliefs.

Flyering and pamphleteering have a long and rich tradition in our democracy, and nothing you volunteers are doing violates that spirit. Just make sure you always access publicly accessible places (i.e., unlocked doors and gates), don’t damage or deface anything, and don’t place anything inside a mailbox.

They have their message, we have ours. Let the conversation roar.

Talking with the FBI…

…was slightly awkward.

When they asked, “Do you know anyone who would want to do this?” we were caught up short for a second. Um, where do we start?

If anyone knows any useful information, please send it to tips@beyondbeliefmedia.com. The FBI would also like to know any places on the net where potential enemies were talking about the War on Easter. We have limited manpower here (especially considering the hassle today), so if you know of any sites, chat rooms, etc. that had chatter before our public launch, please post them in the comments. (Or, if sensitive, to tips@beyondbeliefmedia.com.)

Regarding whether a DoS attack is simply fair game considering the goals of this site, Brian has a post on his blog:

For those who see moral equivalence in this attack, I offer: We didn’t try to shut any churches down.

We’re back

Thank you for your patience as the site was down.

Wikipedia:
“A denial-of-service attack (also, DoS attack) is an attack on a computer system or network that causes a loss of service to users, typically the loss of network connectivity and services by consuming the bandwidth of the victim network or overloading the computational resources of the victim system.”

This is technically different than a “hack,” but it is quite illegal. The FBI’s Computer Crime Squad is helping Beyond Belief Media investigate.

RU Sirius devotes a show to the War on Easter.

The blogosphere: Christian blogger Jeff Wright says our FAQ is “an undiluted glimpse into insanity.” L.A. Voice says “Brian Flemming is going straight to hell.” And God is for Suckers. (Follow the blog conversation on Technorati.)

Official launch tomorrow

Official public launch of the War on Easter is Tuesday, April 11. The press release will go out tonight, and Blogads will start running tomorrow.

Why are we doing this?

Lots of legitimate questions about this campaign and its goals have come up in all sorts of places.

The first draft of the FAQ has now been written to answer some of them.

Comments welcome.
